Split Platform Boots

2011-2012

Two versions of the split platform boots were prototyped to explore the possibility of an upper component extending over part of the platform, breaking the norm of uppers stopping at the footbed level. These ankle boots feature a toe cap seam (as discussed in the Batwing Boots), with a strap designed to complete the vamp, cover the toe cap seam, and control the opening of the throat, which is tongueless and laceless. This opening needs to be large enough for the feet to enter but tight enough for the boots to stay securely on the feet. The strap crosses downward and encircles the upper half of the platform. The lower half of the platform forms a narrower and smaller triangle, causing the upper platform to overhang on three sides. This design reduces bulk and creates a visual and psychological effect similar to that of a “skinny heel.”

Special thanks to Kevork Kalaidjian for hand-shaping the lasts and the platforms for Yeh Design Lab.
