MOD 3×4

1999-2000, 2001, 2004, 2023

MOD 3×4 is a modular shelving system comprised of unitized shelves in three sizes: Large: 12”W x 20”L x18”H, Medium: 9”W x 28”L x 12”H, and Small: 6”W x 36”L x 10”H. The shelves are supported by aluminum poles compressed between the floor and the ceiling on an invisible 3”x4” grid. The shelving system is designed as a freestanding structure that allows permeable division of space and is engineered for a wide range of domestic storage applications. The unitized shelves are sized to accommodate an array of books and objects, from mass-market paperbacks to large-format artist monographs.

The unitized shelves are crafted from lightweight MDF, featuring half-lapped joints for added strength. The edges and interior surfaces are finished with lacquer, while the exterior is wrapped in durable Formica® plastic laminate. To give the system a modern aesthetic, five colors inspired by the Eames have been chosen. Books and objects are seen through the frosted acrylic backs as intriguing profiles and shadows. The poles are machined on the lathe to nest and telescope, polished, etched, and clear-anodized for surface durability.

Special thanks to the SCI-Arc Wood & Metal Shop for allowing the alumni to use the facility.
